Things That Change A Man
Lieutenant Harris sat at his desk back at the precinct, his gaze was squarely upon a picture of a middle-aged lady, standing next to her was a young girl. He reached out picking the picture up, bringing it closer to his face. âFrancis, how Iâve missed you.â A faint smile crossed his lips. âAfter Christy died, we were never the same. I remember it like it was yesterday, some memories never fade, they only make you see the world for what it truly is.â
It was Thanksgiving day, cold and snowing, Christy was on her college break making her way home. While Harris and his wife Francis were home cooking the turkey and all the fixings. They were both ecstatic that their daughter was coming home for the holidays. It had been half a year since the last time they had seen her. When the time came, family members from both sides poured through the doors. With only one person missing, Christy.
âWhere do you suppose Christy is at dear?â Francis asked.
âShe said she was in town the last time she called,â he answered.
âIâm worried.â She frowned, âItâs not like her to be late.â
âSheâs a big girl now hun. Christy can take care of herself, Iâm sure she will be here soon.â
âI hope youâre right,â she responded. There was something in her voice that gave her husband the chills.
An hour went by and still no word yet from, Christy. Harris had a mound of food on the table in front of him, like every year before. Yet he had hardly touched his plate. When he looked over at his wife, she was laughing and talking with the rest of the family. She was putting on a brave face yet her eyes told him a different story. Francis had the look of a mother worried for her child, those eyes pleaded with him to call anyone and everyone that could give them both relief. He nodded to her, then excused himself from the table. He was going to give his boys a call down at the precinct to see if they could help him find his missing daughter.
Harris walked into the living room of his house for some privacy. The phone began to ring, it looked like he wouldnât get the chance to make that call after all. He had a feeling that it wouldnât be necessary anyway. Harris picked up the phone holding it to his ear, âHarris residence.â
âDan this is Paul. We need to talk.â
âYou know that Iâm not on call tonight, right Paul?â
âItâs about your daughter,â Paul said.
âFunny you should bring that up, I-â Harris began.
âSheâs been in an accident, Dan.â Paul interrupted. The conversation had suddenly gone quiet, âDid you hear? Your daughter is hurt badly, Dan. Get Francis, and get your asses to the hospital. Do you understand me?â
Francis walked into the room just as Dan was hanging up the phone. By the look on his face, immediately she could tell that something was wrong.
